The SDFP Foundation Pathway
A year of discernment

Not feeling quite ready for the
Spiritual Directors Formation Programme (SDFP)?

The Foundation Pathway offers a year of intentional preparation and discernment for those sensing a call toward the ministry of spiritual direction, but who need more time or experience before applying for the full two-year programme.

Fran Francis
SDFP National Co-ordinator

This pathway may be suitable if you:

  • Want to take purposeful steps towards the SDFP.

  • Have not yet received enough spiritual direction to meet programme requirements.

  • Wish to connect with SGM people and culture while preparing for formation.

  • Need time to complete the pre/co-requisites at a sustainable pace.

  • Don't yet have sufficient time or funds to undertake the full programme.

  • Have been advised by SDFP programme leaders to begin here.

Many people begin their SGM journey through the Foundation Pathway and go on to complete the SDFP and practise as spiritual directors — including current Programme Leader, Fran Francis, who once began her own journey this way.

What the foundation pathway year involves:

  • Regular sessions with your chosen spiritual director.

  • A tailored workshop and reading plan to help you prepare for SDFP pre/co-requisites.

  • Two online gatherings with Programme Leader Fran Francis and fellow participants.

  • Three supervision sessions with an SDFP supervisor.

  • A discernment interview at the end of the year.

Note: completion of a Foundation Pathway year does not guarantee acceptance into the full SDFP. Entry will be co-discerned with programme leaders at the year’s end.

Costs:

  • Course fee: $400 (payable to SGM at the start of the year).

  • Participants cover their own costs for spiritual direction, supervision sessions, and any recommended workshops or retreats.

How to apply:
Complete the full Spiritual Directors Formation Programme application form and select “I am applying for the Foundation Pathway.” Suitable applicants will be invited to an interview with programme leaders.
